There are places that the people of Turin are used to calling by different names from those they have in reality. Piazza Vittorio for example stands for Piazza Vittorio Veneto as Corso Vittorio is an abbreviation of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and there is no risk of making a mistake because everyone knows these names (indeed, they often do not know the official one).
One such place is Piazza Carlina, which is actually Piazza Carlo Emanuele II. Its nickname is so famous and recognised by the city's inhabitants that for some years now, maps of Turin have started to write it instead of the real name.

The square is located in the historical centre of Turin, not far from the Egyptian Museum.

Overlooking the square is the Church of Santa Croce, a small and beautiful oval-shaped building with splendid marble columns, designed by Filippo Juvarra and built in 1718 at the behest of King Victor Amadeus II of Savoy. In the centre of the square stands a statue of the great statesman Camillo Benso di Cavour, the work of Giovanni Duprè and built in 1872.
