The setting

In the countryside near Trivigno, Villa Leonzio brings together the history of a fourteenth-century Benedictine settlement and the open landscapes of inland Basilicata. Woodland and valleys surround the property, with views towards the Lucanian Dolomites. Its stone buildings, shaded courtyards and broad terrace offer a peaceful setting for a holiday with family or friends.

Restored stonework, terracotta floors and timber details give the house its character. Antique furniture has been carefully restored, and each bedroom has its own furnishings and decorative touches. The accommodation is arranged between a main house and an adjoining guest house, allowing a larger group to spend time together while enjoying separate places to retreat.

The villa has nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms, accommodating 18 guests in standard beds. Up to four additional sleeping places are available in the Family and Superior accommodation, bringing the maximum capacity to 22 guests, with arrangements agreed before arrival.

Living and dining

The historic dining room is at the heart of the house. Stone walls and traditional furniture create an atmospheric space for shared meals, while the neighbouring sitting room has a fireplace, piano and television. The main kitchen is fully equipped with crockery, glassware and utensils suitable for a larger group.

French doors open onto a sheltered portico furnished for outdoor dining. Breakfast can be taken in the shade, with lunches and relaxed evening meals extending naturally into the garden. Upstairs, a generous terrace has tables, chairs, a barbecue and a sink, with access from the living area and one of the bedrooms.

Bedrooms and guest house

Reached by an external staircase, the upper floor of the main house includes a covered patio and two accommodation units, each with two double bedrooms whose beds can be arranged as twins. One unit has independently accessed bedrooms, a small sitting area with a sofa bed and a shower room. The other has a living area with a television and a kitchen with a hob, oven and fridge; crockery and utensils can be brought from the main kitchen downstairs.

The adjoining guest house is entirely on the ground floor, with independent entrances and furnished porticoes. It comprises two double bedrooms with en suite shower rooms; a room with a fixed four-poster double bed, sitting area and sofa bed; and a two-bedroom unit sharing a spacious shower room. The beds in the two en suite rooms and the two-bedroom unit can also be arranged as twins.

Eight of the villa's nine bedrooms therefore offer flexible double or twin arrangements, while the four-poster bed remains a double. A further service kitchen in an adjoining building has a sink, dishwasher and fridge, but no hob. These additional spaces make everyday life more convenient for guests staying in different parts of the property.

Gardens and swimming pool

A short driveway edged with hedges and oak trees leads to the house and parking area. Around the buildings, approximately 10,000 square metres of gardens include roses, aromatic plants and seasonal flowers. Courtyards and shaded porticoes provide places to read, gather over a drink or enjoy a quieter moment outdoors.

The panoramic swimming pool is reached by a gently descending stone path of approximately 20 metres. Measuring 12 by 6 metres, with a depth of 1.50 metres, it has Roman steps with four treads and a telescopic cover. The pool is treated with chlorine. Sun loungers overlook the countryside, and a wooden gazebo furnished with a table and chairs provides shade nearby.

Comfort and practical details

Wi-Fi, parking, heating and air conditioning in the bedrooms are available, together with fans, bed linen, towels, hairdryers and shampoo and shower gel dispensers. Further linen and towels can be requested. Across the property there are two hobs, two dishwashers and two washing machines, as well as ironing facilities and clothes airers.

A car is necessary for exploring the area and reaching local services; the nearest supermarket is approximately four kilometres away. The property is fenced, and pets are welcome. The accommodation is not certified as accessible, and the main house's upper floor is reached by an external staircase, so specific mobility requirements should be discussed before booking.

The owners live in a separate annexe approximately 50 metres from the main house. They maintain the garden and pool on days agreed with guests, respecting the privacy of the accommodation and the pace of each stay.

Food and services on request

A private chef, traditional Lucanian menus, cooking classes, catering and a visiting pizza chef can be arranged to suit the group. A traditional meal on arrival can also be organised, including the option of food prepared by a local restaurant. Grocery shopping can be arranged before arrival or during the stay.

Further services include daily or midweek cleaning, airport transfers and private transport for excursions. Visits to olive oil mills and wineries offer another way to discover local produce. These services are arranged separately from the accommodation, subject to availability, and should be requested at least seven days before check-in.

Exploring Basilicata

Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa introduce guests to the villages and dramatic rock formations of the Lucanian Dolomites. Walking routes include the Seven Stones Trail, while the Volo dell'Angelo offers a more adventurous perspective on the landscape, subject to its operating conditions and availability.

Other days can be spent exploring Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park, discovering Campomaggiore Vecchio or visiting the ceramics workshops of Calvello. Matera provides the focus for a cultural day trip, with further itineraries shaped around the region's historic towns, food and wine. Back at the villa, the terrace and garden offer a welcoming place to return to after a day out.
